This review really nails it. Burton’s a wounded little art nerd who never got over those mean kids in high school who taunted him and world’s failure to recognize his sensitive genius.

It’s Edward Gorey-lite; no balls, no snatch, no guts.

Every so often a set designer is overpromoted into the director’s chair.

A friend’s sister who works at the UN invited me for their Friday cocktails. This is as close to the General Assembly as I was able to get. If you strain your head to the left you can almost catch Gaddafi finishing his speech.

It was the first time I’d been there and it’s as good as they say.

As if it was designed by the man who made your grandmother’s apartment. A relic in a perpetual 1955 idea of Modernity. A lot of potted plants, patterned carpets and travertine.

I expected everyone to dress like Don Draper but they were a mix of the young & good looking and aging bureaucrats with turkey waddles.

Apparently the issue of bicycle parking won’t be settled into people have marblized. Seems about right.

Click thru for update on the state of the art re: NYC bike parking an issue close to my heart and my personal bête noire.

The prognosis seems mehh. Bloomberg’s done a great job re: bike lanes but bike parking has been the ugly stepsister. It’s a trickier nut to crack.

A law has been passed allowing people to bring their bikes into work with them. Terrific except that it’ll mostly apple to new buildings and places of work and won’t really change anything with regard to homes. Most people in NYC live in buildings smaller than 10 stories which couldn’t accomdate inner bike parking, no matter how well intentioned the super. [and their are a lot of those.]

The idea of the bike parking hub as has been discussed for the WTC or downtown Brooklyn is a nice idea and would set a more serious tone re: the bicycle’s new centrality in city planning but is largely misguided. Unless you live/work within a block of such a hub you’ll never use it. The serious, commited city cyclist chooses the bike largely because it’s so easy to go door-to-door. No one I know who rides a bike in the city travels 98% of the way to their destination only to stop short so they can get a better parking spot. That’s how car drivers think. Not cyclists.

What we need in this city are smaller, more nimble and ubiquitous parking solutions AND we need to break the car’s stranglehold on the outer curb.

Not only would that go a long way to solving the parking issue but would be a direct and immediate salvo against the culture of the car.
